Abstract

|
Heart rate decreasing effect of propranolol, a beta-adrenergic blockade, is well known.
This effect of propranolol was studied in conscious and anesthetized men. Propranolol in small doses(0.5mg and 1.0mg) was given intravenously to fifteen coscious and ten halothane anesthetized men.
The heart rate showed definite decrease in all case; the effect being more pronounced in halothane anesthetized group than in conscious one.
The above study indicates that the action mechanism of propranolol is different from that of the belladona alkaloid.
